Wholesale Packaging Types for Turkish Products

How can packaging types affect a B2B deal in Türkiye?

Packaging types have more impact on Türkiye’s economy than one would assume. This is because packaging plays an important role in international trade. By using efficient packaging, Turkish suppliers can ship their goods to all parts of the world. This has been achieved for years through the country’s smart and durable packaging solutions.

According to the Ministry of Trade, the packaging industry in Türkiye has grown promptly over the past 10 years. The ministry revealed that recently, many Turkish suppliers are adopting eco-friendly measures in their shipment plans. Another important factor that influenced packaging types in Türkiye was the country’s evolved production ability. Türkiye has been a leading producer in many industries such as glass, spare parts, food, and more. As it can be deduced; these distinct categories would require different packaging types.

Why is it important to carefully choose a packaging type?

Since shipping goods could take days or weeks, secure and proper packaging is required. The type of packaging must be efficient enough for a perfect delivery. All products must reach the vendor in the same condition they left the manufacturer. To do so, products must be placed in convenient types of packages.

For example:

Wooden packaging is a preferred option for fresh fruits. This is because it allows air to pass inside the package. Ventilation will extend the life of fresh goods.

Tins or metallic packages can work best for wholesale oils. They are durable and can block leakage.

Spare parts can be packaged in cardboard boxes. This can balance the overall weight of the parcel. It will also protect the solid products against impacts, and so on...

Therefore, in Business-to-Business deals (B2B), diversity in packaging types is very important for product protection. It also speaks of the supplier’s well understanding of the field.

Packaging Steps in Wholesale Trade Deals:

In B2B affairs, products normally undergo 3 levels of packaging before reaching the vendor. These packaging levels are:

  • Primary Packaging:

The first step of packaging a product. It is the first material that seals an individual product. This layer is normally designed attractively and would include information about the product/company. For example, the wrapper of a chocolate bar. The tube of your toothpaste. The box of a mobile phone…etc.  Primary packaging can also include a second protection layer of a product if needed. For example, the cardboard box that your toothpaste is packaged in.

  • Secondary Packaging:

The second step of product packaging. It is gathering individual products into one parcel to facilitate their transit and storage.

  • Tertiary Packaging:

This is the final step of product packaging before shipping them to the vendor. It represents joining several secondary packages into one pallet to facilitate their transit and protect them from shipping risks. Tertiary packaging can be used for shipping goods or storing them in warehouses. Examples of tertiary packaging are Shrink Wraps, wood pallets, large cardboard boxes, etc.

What are the Packaging Types for Turkish Products?

As mentioned, Türkiye’s packaging sector is advanced and moving up. Packaging regulations are gradually meeting global and European norms. By respecting environmental and economic measures, Turkish suppliers are providing 7 different types of packaging materials. These are:

  1. Cardboard, paper, and corrugated packaging.

  2. Wooden packaging.

  3. Glass packaging.

  4. Plastic Packaging.

  5. Metal Packaging.

  6. Composite Packaging.

  7. Bio-plastics and Oxo Degradable Plastics.

 Side notes:

These different types of packages can be used in either primary, secondary, or tertiary stages. Depending on a product’s size, category, and shape, the packaging type will differ to provide full benefit. Sometimes packaging companies corporate two forms of packages for the same product. Just like the toothpaste example, where the tube is made of plastic but is packed in a cardboard box. These steps are taken to facilitate shipping.
ther exceptions and differences could occur in the packaging process. The trick is not only to learn about the types of packaging used, you should also seek suppliers with smart packaging solutions.

Luckily, in Türkiye many suppliers hold quality certificates for producing and exporting goods. This can confirm their awareness of choosing the right type of packaging.

Below, All packaging types used in Turkiye are briefly explained. Some have examples of their most popular areas of usage.

Cardboard, Paper, and Corrugated Packaging:

These are the most used packaging types for Turkish products. They are light, flexible, and recyclable. Cardboard and paper packages are among the most economical options. With advanced technologies, these packages can be durable and a good substitute for wooden packaging.

Cardboard/and Corrugated packaging are heavily used in primary and secondary packaging. Their area of usage is huge. As long as they’re holding dry content. Cardboard packaging can be used in food, electronics, and more products.

Wooden Packaging:

Being solid yet “airy”, wooden packages are mostly used for heavy, fresh, or fragile products. Wooden pallets are frequently used in secondary and tertiary packaging.

Glass packaging:

In primary packaging, glass packaging is mostly used for liquids. It is reusable, recyclable, and can add value to the product. This is because it is heavier and more valuable than its potential substitutes like plastic.

Plastic Packaging:

In the last 50 years, plastic packages have been increasing in use as they have sustainable and flexible characteristics. For primary packaging, plastic can be processed in 8 different types:

  • Pet  Packages.

  • PVC Packages.

  • PP Packages.

  • PS Packages.

  • PE Packages.

  • HDPE Packages.

  • LPDE Packages.

  • PC Packages.

Each type of plastic packaging differs in thickness, tenderness, texture, and heat-resistant ability. This has allowed it to cover a wide range of goods. It is famous among:

Liquids - Fresh meats – Snacks – Sauces – Cosmetics – Oils.

Recent research and techniques have increased plastic packaging efficiency. They have also helped lower their collateral damage.

For example, PET packages are heavily used with frozen foods and water bottles. This is because they are 100% recyclable and safe. PC bottles are being used in baby bottles due to their durability and light transmission characteristics.

Metal Packaging:

Metal can be used in primary and secondary packaging. Metal packaging includes aluminum plates and steel sheets. They are reusable and can be shaped into any desired form. For food packaging, metal packaging is usually covered with organic lacquers to prevent direct interaction with food. In primary packaging, metal/tin packaging provide advanced sealing features for extra protection. This fits perfectly with products that have long expiration dates like large quantities of oils, canned food, etc.

Composite Packaging:

Composite packaging refers to 2 or more joined materials used in one package. These combinations include the following:

  • Plastic - Aluminum Packaging. This type is used mostly as candy or chocolate wrappers.

  • PE-coated Boards Packaging (Poly Board): A type of plastic joined with cardboard. This type of packaging is mostly used for high-moisture or liquid products. It is also popular in secondary packaging thanks to its thickness.

  • PE-coated Paper Packaging: A type of plastic joined with paper. It is mostly used for high-temperature products.

  • Plastic Paper – Aluminum Packaging.

  • Paper – Aluminum Packaging.

The last two types are often used in consumer goods sections. They cover powdered products, instant juices, ice cream wrappers, and similar groups…

Bio-plastics and Oxo-Degradable Plastics:

These new types of packaging materials are made of recyclable content. They can be produced from any plant-based material. However, in Türkiye, corn starch, cellulose, and sugar are the most used components in producing these packages.
